About Clementine Hunter

Clementine Hunter is arguably the most famous female artist in the history of Louisiana. Born in the winter of 1886 or early 1887 (no one is really sure of when it was, suffice to say it was that winter) in Natchitoches on a plantation called Hidden Hill, her paintings were inspired by her simple upbringing in the unique culture of Louisiana. She didn't begin painting until she was in her 50s, but her talent was evident and she produced over 4000 works of art before she passed away in 1988. She was illiterate, but she spoke with her paintings in such a way as to render all need for the written word inconsequential. Her subjects were simple to her; they related things that she knew well, and each painting was inspired by something that she experienced in her daily life. Perhaps to some people paintings of people picking cotton or otherwise going about their mundane chores was boring, but Clementine Hunter brought life to the mundane in her every brush stroke. Clementine received an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts by Northwestern State University of Natchitoches and her name is preserved in the famous walk of stars in the city of Natchitoches.
